If you have been a victim of crime, how long did it take you to get over the shock?

Last night, I was at home alone. - My boyfriend was away in Cape-Town, on a business trip. I heard this smashing sound and went to the kitchen, where I saw this man, I thought he was holding a gun, but it must have been a knife. I ran to the bedroom and hid. I pressed the panic button but it did not work (ironically, all the other panic buttons in the house do). I just hid, and they smashed all the windows. The one in the bedroom, kitchen, spare bedroom and lounge. Then I saw this guy's hands trying to climb into the bedroom. It was too high, but all I could see were these struggling hands. I was so scared. I screamed and screamed and the neighbours phoned the police and ADT, who came and the men ran away. I am so scared today, I took the day off work and I am in shock. Whenever I hear a loud noise I literally start shaking. I have never been a victim of crime before. If you have, how long does this take to go away? Please answer, I cannot bear the thought of this carrying on. I am so terrified, when does the fear go away?
