Rolihlahla Dalibhunga was born in 1918, from a family who belonged to a tribe in the eastern cape of south africa. He got the name nelson mandela at school, because his teachers gave him this english name. When he grew up, he became a lawyer and accompanied by another lawyer Oliver Tambo, who fought against apartheid in South Africa. He was also the vice-president of the political party: ANC who means African National Congress. He fought to get the abolition of apartheid adopting a policy of peaceful resistance to it. But in 1960, his party was proclaimed illegal. He didn't stop his activities so he was arrested and spent 26 years in the prison of Robben Islands. Until the president of South Africa De Klerk, thanks to an international campaign of Mr. Tambo, lifted the ban on ANC and freed Nelson Mandela. In 1994 through democratic elections, Mandela was elected president of South Africa.
